This website contains the work of Najm Hosain Syed and his life partner Samina Hasan Syed (29th Dec 1944 - 16th September 2016). Najm is a poet, playwright, critic and composer. This website contains his own writings (he refers to his work as Ayan Bani or the writings of an ayana/child//raw person) and writings of classical poets from Baba Farid to Khawajah Ghulam Farid (he refers to these as Sayan Bani or writings of Sayana/wise/mature person) that he has edited, and researched extensively over five decades. This website also contains music composed by Najm during this period, and sung by Samina and their daughter, artist Risham Hosain Syed.
Samina was the major force behind the Sangat, the weekly gathering that became active in 1973 at 49 Jail Road, Lahore, the residence of Samina and Najm. Post Covid-19 it has continued online. Here Punjabi poetry and literature is discussed and sung. Samina led the singing at Sangat till her last days. Samina Hasan Syed taught music at College of Home Economics, Lahore (now a University), from where she retired as an Associate Professor in 2004. She also taught music at Beaconhouse National University, Lahore.
